COMMUNITY RE-ENTRY

People with brain injury are faced with incredible challenges as they make their way in society following brain injury. There are a variety of reasons that both children and adults have problems "fitting in" to the life they knew in the past. Individuals living with brain injury must cope with the loss of the person they "knew." People with brain injury must also adjust to their new personalities and behaviors. Changes in personality and behavior may be poorly understood by friends and co-workers, making adjustment to everyday life even more challenging.

Every person with a brain injury experiences return to community life in a different way. The information in this section will help you understand some of the challenges and the strategies that may lessen frustration and support continued growth. Many people can help you and your loved one understand the everyday stresses of reclaiming and rebuilding lives. The Brain Injury Association of New York State can help you identify support groups and other community advocates where you will find support and practical information.

LIFE GOALS

This section of the notebook is designed to share what has been learned over many years by the thousands of families who are part of the journey you are beginning. These materials, and others you will gather over time, emphasize the possibilities for growth and celebration after brain injury. Planning for a life filled with meaningful activities and realistic goals will take time. The need to set goals will change over time as people achieve more independence and find successful strategies for dealing with the obstacles they face.

No one should face the trauma of brain injury alone……
